Championship top goalscorers– The EFL Championship is the second tier of English football and at the end of the season, it supplies three new teams to the Premier League. There are many players who never tasted championship football throughout their careers. There are also players who spent the bulk of their career playing in the second tier. The nature of the competition makes it impossible to establish some records. For example, it is impossible to win the Championship consecutively because winning guarantees absence for the following season.

Another feat quite difficult but not impossible to accomplish is scoring many goals over a long period of time. This is because not many prolific strikers stay in the championship. If we look down in history, however, we will see some forwards who spent just enough time to put their name in the competition’s history as far as goal scoring is concerned. Here are the all-time championship top goalscorers.

Grabban is one of the most popular players on our list of Championship top goalscorers. His career is 13 years already and the 32-year old is still going strong scoring goals for Nottingham Forest. He did play with Norwich and Bournemouth in the Premier League but he has spent more time in the Championship. He has 215 appearances in the tournament with 91 goals to his name.

6. Daryl Murphy – 93 goals

Murphy’s career is a perfect cocktail of English and Scottish football. The striker played for Sunderland in the Premier League in the early 2000s but has not been back since he left them in 2010. Now 38 years old, it is safe to say his career is over. Murphy who is currently with Bolton Wanderers in League one played for 5 clubs in the Championship making over 300 appearances. He won the top scorer award with Ipswich Town in 2014/2015.

5. Chris Martin – 93 goals

Martin is tied with Murphy at 93 goals. Like Murphy, he has also tasted Premier League football. Much of his career has been spent outside his parent clubs he has seven loan moves to his name. Martin still plays in the Championship and should soon outscore Murphy. His 93 goals came in 343 appearances.

4. Jordan Rhodes – 108 goals

So we move to the 100-goal club on our list of championship top goalscorers. Only four players have ever achieved the feat of scoring 100 goals or more and the first on our list os Jordan Rhodes. He had a short Premier League experience with Middlesbrough in 2016/2017. Other than that, his career has been pretty much Championship-based. The 30-year old has played for six teams in the competition amassing 286 appearances.

3. Billy Sharp – 114 goals

It is hard to imagine how sharp Billy has been in his career. The 34-year old striker currently captains Sheffield United in the Premier League where they are contending for a place in Europe. Sharp has played for six clubs throughout his time in the Championship and with 322 games under his belt. He ranks third with 114 goals.

2. Ross McCormack – 120 goals

McCormack edges Billy sharp by six goals to rank second on our list of Championship top goalscorers. The former Scotland striker who has never played in the Premier League is currently with Motherwell in the Scottish Premier League. He has played for five clubs amassing 333 appearances and one top scorer award.

1. David Nugent – 121 goals

Nugent is a very good striker but he has not been able to establish himself with the chances he had gotten in the Premier League. It is either his club gets relegated or chooses to let him go as Leicester City did. The Huyton native narrowly leads the way with 121 Championship goals.
