He was born on the 26th of January, 1963 to a middle-class family in Setúbal, Portugal. His father, José Manuel Mourinho Félix was a professional football player while his mother, Maria Júlia Carrajola dos Santos was a primary school teacher. His father, Felix played for Os Belenenses and Vitória de Setúbal, both in Portugal and also played one match for the Portuguese national team. Jose has an elder sister named Teresa. His love for football developed as he accomplished his father on his weekend matches and training sessions, and that was how he was able to learn the nuances of the game. He attempted becoming a football player himself as he followed his father to the Belenenses youth team to become a professional football player, but he soon realized he lacked the strength and pace to be successful in the game and opted instead to become a coach. He left his private business school he was enrolled into by his mother and chose to study sports science in the Technical University of Lisbon. After completing his diploma, he then worked as a physical education teacher at schools for about five years.

- Coaching Career
He became the youth team coach at Vitória de Setúbal in the early 1990s after he returned to his hometown. He then had short spells as assistant manager at Estrela da Amadora and scout at Ovarense. In 1992, he was helpful to work as an interpreter for a renowned foreign coach, Bobby Robson, at Sporting Club Portugal. The two soon developed a good working relationship and he followed Robson to FC Porto in December 1993, becoming his assistant. At Porto, he enjoyed success alongside Robson as their Porto team reached the 1993–94 UEFA Champions League semi-finals and also won the 1993–94 Taça de Portugal. The team also won the 1994–95 and 1995–96 Portuguese championship, and even 1994, 1995 and 1996 Portuguese Super Cup. In 1996, Robson was on the move again, this time to Spanish giants Barcelona and he was once again accompanied by Jose Mourinho. While at Barcelona, Jose took on additional responsibilities of coordinating practice sessions and providing tactical advice to the players. That season ended on a high for the team as they won the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Robson then moved to another club the following season but this time, Mourinho didn’t go with him as Barcelona retained his services and he became the assistant to new head coach, Louis van Gaal. Barcelona was successful under Van Gaal as the club won the league title twice. Later, Mourinho was given coaching duties of Barcelona B by Van Gaal who also let him coach the first team during Copa Catalunya in 2000, which he won. In September, he was appointed a manager at Benfica but within a week of securing his new job, Robson offered him the role of assistant manager at Newcastle United which he declined. His work at Benfica was brief as he soon left for Uniao de Leiria in 2001, helping the team move up the league table. On the 23rd of January 2002, Jose Mourinho was appointed as head coach of an underperforming Porto team and by the end of the season, he had taken the team to 11 victories in 15 matches. His first league title as a manager came the following year when he leads his Porto team to a record 86 points. He also won the Taça de Portugal and the UEFA Cup that year. More success soon followed the following season as Porto won the one-match Portuguese Super Cup, the Primeira Liga, and the UEFA Champions League. His team achieved the remarkable feat of beating Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United and this opened the doors of Chelsea for him the following season. On June 2nd, 2004, he was announced as the new Chelsea manager, replacing Italian, Claudio Ranieri. He resumed at Chelsea with most of his support staff from Porto and set about overhauling the Chelsea squad. He spent substantial transfer fees on acquiring talented and skilled players to fit his coaching style. His first stint in charge of Chelsea didn’t yield any continental honors but he won two Premier League Cups, two Football League Cups, and a FA Cup for the club. He later severed ties with Chelsea following disagreements with the owner, Roman Abramovich on September 20, 2007. He left as the clubs most successful manager. He moved to Internazionale, also known as Inter Milan, on June 2nd, 2008 on a three-year contract. He wins the Supercoppa Italiana and also finished top of Serie A in his first season in charge of Inter. The following season, he achieved a truly remarkable feat, winning a treble of Serie A, the Coppa Italia, and the UEFA Champions League titles. He moved over immediately after the success of his second season in charge of Inter to Spanish football powerhouse, Real Madrid. This move attracted a world record-breaking compensation package and was sealed on the 28th of May 2010. His first season in charge of Madrid didn’t go as expected but his second season in charge brought the La Liga title. He returned to Chelsea in June 2013 and finished the season in 3rd spot, four points behind winners Manchester City. The following season he once again clinched the Premier League and the Football League Cup for the third time as the manager of the football club. His third season in charge of Chelsea for the second time was however disastrous as he left after losing 9 of 16 games that season. He moved over to Manchester United on May 27, 2016, signing a three-year contract. He became the first United manager to win major trophies in his debut season by winning both the EFL Cup and the Europa League. Although he the club achieved a second place finish under his guidance the following season, he was sacked in December 2018 midway through his third season in charge as the club went through one of its worst-ever starts to a season.
