In the fall of 2018, Samsung introduced a new family of smartwatches to the Russian market, almost immediately after the world premiere. In our country, the Samsung Galaxy Watch is available in a version with a size of 46 mm for 26.9 thousand rubles, and also for 42 mm for 21.9 thousand rubles. Version with LTE-modem, sold in other countries, is not yet available. Interestingly, the Korean company is one of the last, which is trying to update its wearable electronics every year, despite strong competition from the “king” of Apple Watch smartwatches.

  • Screen

In this generation of Samsung smartwatches, two sizes of gadgets appeared – 42 and 46 mm in diameter. So the company decided to smash the “brutal” version and the “female” (in all fairness, the 42-mm modification has a black color). Modifications vary and screen sizes – 1.2 and 1.3 inches, respectively. But technically, they are identical – these are round sensory AMOLED-matrix with a resolution of 360 × 360. That is, in a more affordable version, the pixel density is even higher. The screen is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass. By the way, there is support for the Samsung AlwaysOn Display proprietary function, that is, the display allows you to display information all the time, but this will adversely affect battery life.

  • Housing

The case of the smartwatch is made of stainless steel. The strap, regardless of the version, is silicone and can be quickly replaced. The case has two function buttons and a rotating bezel with which you can control the watch. The Samsung Galaxy Watch is waterproof to IP68 standard and has the added protection of military standard MIL-STD-810G. The 42 mm version is available in two colors – “deep black” and “rose gold.” Large only in the shade “silver steel.”

  • Processor, memory, communications

The smartwatch runs on the Exynos 9110 chipset, which is the overclocked version of last year’s Samsung Gear S3 processor. The Samsung Galaxy Watch has 768 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal memory for user files, such as music. The clock has acceleration sensors, a gyroscope, a barometer, and a pulse. The latter, according to Samsung, has been significantly reworked and now works better in water. Unfortunately, there is no version with LTE support in Russia yet, since this is due to the use of a virtual SIM card, and domestic operators do not support them. In all other respects – a set of communication for the flagship wearable gadget. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS navigation and Glonass and NFC. The latter works with Samsung Pay.

  • Software and compatibility

The new watches were immediately presented on the Samsung operating system for smart devices Tizen 4. The main change, compared with the previous version, is the ability to use the pool. Because of this, the clock has already appeared many applications for swimming. The user can select and the dial to your taste. Smart watches can work with devices on Android 5.0 or a newer version, and on iOS 9 or a newer version. However, the manufacturer does not conceal that Galaxy Watch is best compatible with Samsung devices.

  • Battery

The Samsung Galaxy Watch did a good job of increasing battery life. A small clock has a 270 mAh battery installed, and a large one has a 472 mAh battery. The manufacturer claims about 2-3 days of work with active use, and if you try, then the work can be stretched to 7 days. The complete charger will charge your smartwatch in 2 hours.

Recall the latest Gear Sport model was released in the fall of 2017, but it was considered as an intermediate, fitness-oriented, not a full replacement for the Gear S3, which went on sale in 2016.

While the fans are in agonizing suspense, KP has gathered all the rumors and leaks that are known about the Samsung Galaxy Watch.

  • What could be the Samsung Galaxy Watch

As stated above, Samsung hosts a large presentation on August 9th. Given the invitation to this event with a close-up of the stylus, we can assume that the main event will be the release of the Galaxy Note 9 smartphone. Given the small timing of the event, Samsung may postpone the announcement of the new clock to the IFA 2018. IFA starts on August 31, but the largest technology companies usually hold their own press conferences the day before. Based on this logic, Galaxy Watch may debut on August 30th.

As for the release date, the Gear S2 was announced at the IFA in August 2015 and went on sale in October, while the Gear S3 began to be sold from November 2016. Perhaps this time, Samsung will go on a similarly long period of delivery of watches at retail.

  • Price Samsung Galaxy Watch in Russia and the world

Previous models of “smart” watches from Samsung were positioned in the premium segment of the market. Therefore, users can expect that the price of the Galaxy Watch will be high. Gear Sport was estimated at 340 euros (about 25 thousand rubles), and Gear S3 – at 400 euros (about 30 thousand rubles), so the new model is likely to receive a similar Price tag. If Samsung offers an LTE version in the Galaxy Watch, which gives the device its own cellular connection, the price of the model will be slightly higher. Recall that Apple’s Watch 3 watch prices start at 370 euros (about 27 thousand rubles), but the LTE version costs from 450 euros (about 33 thousand rubles).

  • Title

Given that Samsung calls its smartphones “Galaxy,” experts suggest that the new watch will be closely interconnected with the user’s phone.

The South Korean company has always had a complicated device naming strategy. For example, the original Galaxy Gear was released in 2013 along with Google’s Android Wear system (now called Wear OS), and then they were replaced by Gear 2, also with Android Wear.

But then Samsung announced the next generation of devices that were called Gear S. It was a smartwatch that was managed using Tizen’s own operating system, which replaced Android Wear. This was followed by Gear S3 and Gear Sport, which also use Tizen.

In 2018, Samsung was expected to adhere to this strategy and introduce Gear S4 running Tizen. But then rumors began to circulate about the new name of the Galaxy Watch, giving rise to speculations about abandoning its own software and returning to Wear OS.

These rumors were reinforced by an image published by the FCC, which shows a sketch of Samsung’s upcoming Samsung Smart Watch, written on the back of the case.

The name of the watch was finally revealed in July, when Samsung accidentally (or, possibly, intentionally,) placed a product called the Galaxy Watch on its American website, and then quickly deleted it.

All this makes us wonder what will happen with the Samsung Gear VR virtual reality headset. Whether the next generation will be called Galaxy VR is still a mystery.

  • Software

Confusion in the name of the model means that it is not yet possible to say with absolute certainty whether the watch will work under the control of Tizen or Wear OS. Nevertheless, one of the sources in the company said that the device would “work on Android Wear.”

This coincides with a previous statement made by technology analyst Evan Blass, who wrote on Twitter on May 23 that the new Gear watch, running under the Wear OS, and not Tizen, was seen on the wrists of Samsung employees. However, on June 7th, Blass denied his own tweet, writing that he saw only one-time prototypes.

It has been confirmed later report from SamMobile, which said that the Galaxy Watch would have a new fourth-generation Tizen installed. Although the Samsung software was introduced a year ago, so far nothing is known about the new features or its design. Therefore, the company will undoubtedly keep it for the big launch of a new watch.

The report also states that the Galaxy Watch will ship with Bixby, Samsung’s voice assistant and Apple’s rival Siri.

  • Specifications of Samsung Galaxy Watch

Experts have a rather detailed understanding of the Galaxy Watch due to a leak that occurred on Samsung’s own website. The merged image showed a pink-gold device with a diameter of 42 millimeters. It is expected that other options will be available, but nothing is known about them yet.

For the Gear S3, Samsung offered two options: the usual model called the Classic and the bulkier – the Frontier. The leaked pink-gold model suggests that Samsung is positioning the Galaxy Watch as part of the fashion segment, unlike its predecessors.

It was also reported that Samsung would release two versions of the Galaxy Watch. And the second model is likely to be less than 42 mm in diameter.

Rumors also suggest that the watch will be available in black, silver and gold. But it is unclear whether the latter is related to “rose gold” or the company has added another color.

The image also shows two buttons, as in Gear S2. Experts suspect that Samsung’s innovative rotating crown will return to the Galaxy Watch as a convenient way to navigate the operating system.

While it is impossible to say exactly what the case and strap of the model are made of, but the design assumes that Samsung is striving for excellent appearance and sensation – which was lacking in last year’s Gear Sport.

It is very likely that at least one version of the watch will have the same 1.3-inch touchscreen as in previous Gear models, although the increase in resolution and pixel density will always be welcome. As usual, both versions will receive Bluetooth support.

Battery life can also be improved since leaks report that the Galaxy Watch will have a 470 mAh battery, which is longer than the Gear S3 (380 mAh) and Gear Sport (300 mAh).

It is assumed that the device will be equipped with new sensors: the Galaxy Watch will probably learn how to measure the user’s blood pressure. The possible inclusion of the sensor was mentioned in a patent submitted to Samsung in February. If the technology appears in the Galaxy Watch, it will be beneficial to distinguish it from all competitors.

According to SamMobile, it is also expected that the Samsung S Health app will get a big update with the new watch, including deeper sleep tracking.
