Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is a board in Nigeria that allows or permits the entry into higher institutions. In other words, Jamb is an entrance examination board for tertiary or higher Institutions in Nigeria. This board regulates or controls the entrance examinations into Universities; the board also conducts and regulates similar examination to polytechnics applicants, to both public and private monotechnics and to colleges of Education in Nigeria. Entry into higher Institutions varies from Universities, polytechnic, Monotechnic, and college of education. Only Universities uses Jamb as a mode of entry before, others use other means. But recently, to save time and to reduce the cost of operation and also for a candidate to have an equal chance and opportunity to get admission into any tertiary Institution of their choice and basically on their academic performance. Meanwhile, the entire Jamb candidate must have sat for the West African Examinations Council certificate (WAEC), or its equivalent which is National Examination Council (Nigeria) NECO.

Recently, JAMB introduced a new method of examination practice as they modified the system and also merge both exams together for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). This new modification in examination practice enables JAMB to create an equal distribution of available space in Higher Institution.

  • Jamb History

As of 1974, there are seven (7) Federal Universities in Nigeria. Each of these universities administered and conducted its own entry examinations and admitted the students. In regards to this, the system is seen as a waste of resources, and also there is a limitation to the process of conducting examination for their candidate. This supposed limitation became a problem and a concern to the committee and the universities vice chancellors. In the year 1976, the problems migrate to another level. This led the Military government under the leadership of General Olusegun Obasanjo to establish six (6) other universities. Consequently, the government under the chairmanship of Mr. M. S. Angulu brought up a national committee on the mode of entry to universities. With the set up by the government, there was a request made specifically by the Committee to set up a Joint Matriculation Board. The Committee, therefore, came up with the idea and recommendation to set up of two (2) bodies, which are: the Central Admissions Board and the Joint Matriculation Board. The two bodies recommended by the committee were accepted by the Federal military government then and some other recommendations were accepted but not all the recommendation were accepted by the federal military government. The accepted recommendation led to the formation of the two bodies: the central Admissions Board and the Joint Matriculation Board. Due to the backup of the Federal Military Government by the Act (No. 2 of 1978) on the legal instrument, there was an establishment of the Board on 13th February 1978.

With the aim to empower and strengthen the new Board, the Federal Executive Council amended decree No. 2 of 1978 by August 1988 to conduct Matriculation examinations as a mode of entry into all polytechnics and colleges of education in Nigeria.

Gradually, the board begins to grow and Jamb introduces a new method of writing examinations which is the computer-based examinations for all candidate before now Jamb uses a paper-based method to write matriculation examination. In fact, the growth of the board also includes Jamb online registrations (e-registration), online payment (e-payment), online checking of results and printing, this enables relieved stress and also enhances their activities and growth.
